Understanding Temporary vs. Permanent Disability in South Carolina Workers’ Comp

When you’re injured at work, your ability to earn a living may be affected—sometimes for a short time, sometimes permanently. That’s why South Carolina’s workers’ compensation system provides wage replacement benefits based on the type and severity of your injury. The two most common classifications are temporary disability and permanent disability, and understanding the difference can help you plan for what’s next.

Temporary Disability

If your injury keeps you out of work temporarily, you may be eligible for Temporary Total Disability (TTD) benefits. These are paid when a doctor determines that you’re unable to return to work while you recover.

  • You must be out of work for more than 7 days to qualify.

  • Payments typically equal 66 2/3% of your average weekly wage, up to a set maximum.

  • Benefits continue until your doctor says you’ve reached “maximum medical improvement” (MMI)—the point where your condition is not expected to improve further.

If you’re cleared to return to light-duty work or reduced hours, you may instead receive Temporary Partial Disability (TPD), which helps make up the difference in lost wages.

Permanent Disability

If your injury results in long-term or permanent limitations, you may qualify for Permanent Partial Disability (PPD) or Permanent Total Disability (PTD) benefits.

  • PPD is for workers who can still work but have a permanent impairment—like losing the use of a hand or reduced mobility.

  • PTD is for workers who are unable to return to any gainful employment due to the severity of their injury.

The amount and duration of permanent disability benefits depend on several factors, including the body part affected and impairment ratings assigned by your doctor.

Why This Matters

Insurance companies may try to rush the process or push for an early return to work. Knowing the difference between temporary and permanent disability—and how each affects your benefits—is critical to protecting your financial future.
